Brief Summary of your Start Up:
We started with the Utah Mama’s Handbook, a reference guide for moms and families along the Wasatch Front. We were quickly approached to franchise and have launched books in Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Seattle. We also launched an online marketplace called SupportYourLocalMama.com for moms who have their own businesses, that program is now housed under our national website TodaysMama.com – along with an online magazine and more!
Company Website? http://www.TodaysMama.com
What inspired you? Seeing Julie Clark on Oprah . . . she made me mad! I thought “Here I am buying your videos with my spare change, and you are probably off on some island right now. If you can make millions off those videos – I can do something too!”
How long have you been in business?
About 2 years
How did you fund it? An SBA loan – we invested most of our profits back into the company for growth, and as of this week we finally found our investor!!!! What a journey!!!
Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)?
Nope—but I have to give some credit to the Fairy Godfathers out there! Obviously lots of male entrepreneurs in our valley – and there have been many who have been so helpful to us and have been great to network and hook us up with people.
Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups?
Current Business Challenge? Well, last week I would have said finding investors. This week I’d say: Preparing for large scale growth. We are adding new markets like crazy! Just added DC and San Diego within the last week. We’re getting ready to do a big press tour in New York . . . how do you prepare for this kind of stuff! We’ve got lots to do in the next six weeks—Being prepared is our current challenge!
What are you doing about it?
I made an appt. to get my haircut and my brows waxed. ☺
We are 6 weeks and counting to our press tour. We have a 6 week plan sorted by category with tasks prioritized and assigned to each member of our staff. We’re getting there . . .
Favorite motivational quote: Well, here are three I’ve really liked lately:
The wise man said, “It can’t be done.” The fool came and did it.
“All big things in this world are done by people who are naive and have an idea that is obviously impossible.” —Dr. Frank Richards
“One must have chaos in one’s soul to give birth to a dancing star”
Mark my husband who is so flexible and supportive (and a great cook and helps clean the house, etc. etc.) I’m so lucky to have married someone who treats me with such respect and who has such a balanced approach to life, our family, and the tasks involved to keep it all rolling. And he’s an entrepreneur too! Our household is crazy!
I also have a 4 year old son and a 2 year old daughter (20 months apart). They do not have their own businesses yet.
If so, how do you balance family and business?
Late to bed, early to rise . . . it’s tricky. I don’t have a trio, a blackberry, or any other fancy phone like that because I’d be obsessed with checking my email at places like the park. I try to be 100% wherever I am. It’s not always possible, but I shoot for it.
Can’t say I have a favorite. The only book I’ve read more than once is The Castle In the Attic. Right now I’m reading The Long Tail, and The Girlfriends Detective Agency. I enjoy most books.
What do you do to relax?
Turn off my cell phone! I love going on walks. I also LOVE spas! Another great thing about being a Mama in business . . . the bartering system. Find a spa to trade services or advertising with. It’s worth it!
Oh, and I have to mention one more guilty pleasure . . . Conan O’Brien! One of the funniest men on the planet. If I’m up late, I’ll try to sneak in a few minutes of Conan! As a matter of fact, I may go catch a bit right now!
What do you want to change most about your world?
Some days I want people to be more educated about the Middle East, fix our nations health care crisis, and put an end to high gas prices. But in my little world most of the time I’d just be happy to have the time to create a menu for the week and strive for a cleaner house amidst the borage of tasks I have to accomplish. Is that a rotten sippy cup behind my desk?
What are you most proud of?
My kids. I know, everyone says it – but I just remarked to my husband tonight how incredible it is that our DNA came together and created such cool little people. I think they are the most entertaining beings around (even more than Conan O’Brien) and I couldn’t be happier than to walk through the rain filled gutters with them, collect nasty bugs (the last ones name was Beast Buddy), and I even occasionally enjoy the trouble they get into (eating a whole pack of the Pixie Sticks behind the couch).
What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses?
Be flexible. When you meet resistance, it’s actually my opinion that you don’t go immediately trying to conquer it – I think that when you meet resistance it’s time to reconsider. That doesn’t mean quit – it means that you should ask yourself some hard questions. Are all of your ducks in a row? Do you have the right partners and people in your business? What’s holding you back? Is this the right business at the right time? I think that in general business should flow- not necessarily be easy, but it should flow. If you are headed in the wrong direction, I believe you meet more resistance along the way. But when you are headed in the right direction, it’s serendipitous – kind of magical.
Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)?
If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use?
I actually don’t think I could wear a tiara. I’d probably settle for some twine to pull my hair back or something! ☺
Would you be interested in being a Fairy Godmother to another woman entrepreneur? (I am working on a secure system to do this, any ideas?)
SURE! Love to chat with other women in business, love networking, love the opportunities and resources that are out there for us. There is a lot!
What business subjects would you feel comfortable mentoring in?
I’m open to sharing the knowledge I’ve gained in all aspects of a start up work from home mom type of a company. I wouldn’t say I’ve got it all right- everyone has a different experience. I would not be great in the realm of accounting . . . scary!
Would you be interested in going to lunch with other women entrepreneurs for a “networking tea party”?
If you are out of Utah County, would you be willing to be a facilitator of such an event?
Depending on my schedule – but I might be interested.
